So its nothing new that this is a tough economy and it seems next to impossible to find a job. Now this is a particularly wide topic to cover so I want to narrow this down. I want this article to pertain only to the new generation. The ones who are joining the work force (or attempting to) graduating school , chasing their dreams. Now who’s to blame for this horrible economy? What went wrong? We went from a world where dreams existed and came true. The worries we have now didn’t seem to exist for our parents. If they didn’t want to go to college there was always the family business or the factory job with benefits. Job seeking back then wasn’t as cut throat as it is now. Is corporate greed and the insatiable love for power and the dollar bill about to destruct our society? Yet no one is awake yet and ready to face the painful truth. The youth of this country is still sound asleep, abandoning all practicality and reaching for the stars. But unfortunately for them those stars burnt out years ago. We have schools that are not properly preparing students for life after college. Particularly the bloodsucking chain schools if you will ( I think you know what I’m referring to. You know 40 different ones all over the country, tuition cost an arm, both legs, your first born and your soul? Yeah those ones). Now we have students attending these universities with no idea how they're going to pay back these tuitions. Blindly signing their lives away at the bottom of an enrollment agreement. They follow their dreams and just assume from the 4 years of high school guidance counselor propaganda “College Equals Job, No College Equals Unsuccessful”. So now we have kids who truly believe they are taking the best path for their lives but 4 years later they have a bachelors degree in some obscure subject, a job at the local diner, and their very own bedroom at mom and dads house. The world is changing and we need to change the way we prepare for it. American High Schools and American Society have this one size fits all approach. That every kid in America needs to be a college graduate to be considered successful. When truthfully nowadays, you have a much higher chance of finding a job with technical school training then you do with obscure college degrees. Its going to be pretty hard to fix if we keep digging this hole. We’re going to start to see it everywhere. The guy who rings up your groceries has a BFA and Sallie Mae’s the only girl who blows up his phone ‘cause she wants her 100K back and she wants it now. The girl who serves you at the diner on Tuesday nights? She sold her soul to Freddie Mac so she’s probably not going to be of much help stimulating the economy either. I mean I don’t see these people buying new cars or houses anytime soon. So how do we fix this? I’m not trying to be a downer here. I’m all for dreaming but we need to stand up and realize that we are not a one size fits all youth. We need to grow up a little and start being more realistic here. There is not one path that suites everyone and we need to stop letting society tell us that’s how it is. This needs to change and the youth of our nation needs to start being prepared a whole lot differently or were going to end up with two social classes, rich and poor. So the point I’m trying to make here is that if you truly want the American Dream, then its time to WAKE UP!
